An unemployed man, Ibrahim Sanni, was on Thursday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged theft of some cosmetics valued at N125, 000 and N210, 000 cash.

Sanni, 23, whose address was not provided in court, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing

The prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, told the court that the accused committed the offences with one other still at large on Feb. 11 at Gowon Estate, Egbeda near Lagos.

He said the accused entered the shops of Mr Ayotunde Showunmi and Mr Ifeanyi Nwabukwu through their roof- ceilings.

“He stole cosmetics valued at N125,000 and N125,000  cash  from Showunmi’s shop and another N85,000 cash from Nwabukwu’s shop,” he said.

Awase said the accused was caught by some security guards who also found some of the stolen items with him.

“The accused was caught holding a bag and when it was searched, some of the stolen items were found inside it.

“He confessed that his accomplice had escaped with the rest of the stolen items,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287, 307 and 411of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Section 287 provides a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 307 stipulates a seven-year imprisonment for burglary.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate J.A. Adigun in his ruling granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adigun said the sureties must be gainfully employed and produce evidence of two years’ tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case until Feb. 27 for mention
