In the last several years, the Next Rated category of the Headies Awards had often been laced with murmurs, disagreements, controversies and sometimes, bottle flinging!

This year however, there was a switch from the norm as the announcement of the winner was met with screams of satisfaction from near and yonder. Of course there would be sighs of disappointments here and there for with every winner, someone definitely lost.

DMW star Mayorkun has proved himself to be deserving of every accolade that comes his way not just from the Headies but beyond the Headies.

It is difficult to accept the fact that Mayorkun is just two years in the industry. His strings of achievements leave us wondering if indeed 2016 was the year of his discovery.

Transitioning healthily from the rookie picked up by Davido in a make shift studio, Mayorkun has shown that he is indeed the Mayor of Lagos.

His tunes are popular, his lyrics are widely accepted, his zeal is infectious!

While the Next Rated nominee list was a collage of some of the best new kids on the bloc, it was almost too easy to see Mayorkun winning this one and this is why no one is really complaining…well, let’s say no one is breaking bottles or upturning the green room!
